What is QRIS? Indonesia's National QR Payment Standard
QRIS is Indonesia's national QR code payment standard launched by Bank Indonesia in 2019, now cross-border interoperable across ASEAN.
Last updated:
QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) is Indonesia's national QR code payment standard, launched by Bank Indonesia in August 2019. It unifies all wallet providers, banks, and fintechs under a single interoperable QR code.
QRIS runs on the MPM (Merchant Presented Mode) model, where merchants display a static or dynamic code that buyers scan with their banking or wallet app. By 2026 it exceeds 35 million connected merchants and has become a core rail for MSME financial inclusion across the Indonesian archipelago.
Since 2022 QRIS has been interoperable with Thailand's PromptPay, Malaysia's DuitNow, Singapore's NETS and the Philippines' standard under the ASEAN Regional Payment Connectivity (RPC) initiative. In April 2026 Bank Indonesia announced a QRIS-UPI link with India's NPCI, letting Indian tourists pay via UPI apps at QRIS merchants.
QRIS is part of the BIS and G20 effort to reduce cost and increase speed of cross-border payments in the Global South.
